Gaia AI Factory

The Faculty of Space Technologies is one of the partners of the Gaia AI Factory consortium – one of Poland’s most significant investments in artificial intelligence development and an important element in building a European ecosystem of trusted AI.

The project is carried out by a consortium led by the Academic Computer Centre Cyfronet AGH within the framework of the European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU).

The goal of the project is to create advanced infrastructure and a comprehensive ecosystem supporting the development, testing and deployment of cutting-edge artificial intelligence technologies based on European values:

  • security,
  • transparency,
  • responsibility.

The coordinator of Gaia AI Factory activities at the Faculty of Space Technologies is Dr Michał Lupa.

Future-ready AI computing infrastructure

Gaia AI Factory is an investment worth approximately €70 million, co-financed by Poland and the European Union.

Its core will be a new AI-optimized supercomputer located in Krakow and managed by the Academic Computer Centre Cyfronet AGH.

The system will include:

  • more than 1,000 GPU accelerators,
  • advanced infrastructure optimized for artificial intelligence computing,
  • resources enabling large-scale AI model training, testing and deployment.

The new infrastructure will significantly increase Poland’s computing capabilities and enable the implementation of projects requiring extensive computational resources – both in science and industry.

 

An ecosystem connecting science, business and public administration

Gaia AI Factory is not only a computing infrastructure project, but also a platform for cooperation supporting the entire lifecycle of artificial intelligence solutions.

The project includes:

  • access to advanced high-performance computing resources,
  • development and access to large-scale data repositories,
  • expert support for AI projects,
  • training programmes and digital competence development,
  • support in preparing and implementing AI-based solutions.

The infrastructure will be available to:

  • research teams,
  • universities and scientific institutions,
  • startups,
  • companies,
  • public administration.

 

The role of the Faculty of Space Technologies

The Faculty of Space Technologies at AGH participates in the project as a partner responsible for supporting the development of artificial intelligence applications in the space sector.

Combining AI technologies with vast amounts of data generated by space missions creates new opportunities in areas such as:

  • satellite data analysis,
  • Earth observation,
  • climate change monitoring,
  • space environment analysis,
  • modelling of processes occurring in space,
  • development of autonomous systems for future space missions.

Artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly important in the space sector. It enables faster processing of massive amounts of data, automation of satellite image analysis, and the creation of advanced tools supporting decision-making in space missions.

Access to Gaia AI Factory’s infrastructure will strengthen the capabilities of Polish research teams and companies developing innovative space technologies.

The infrastructure developed within the project will support artificial intelligence applications in many areas, including:

Healthcare:

  • analysis of medical data,
  • faster and more accurate diagnostics,
  • development of personalised therapies,
  • support for medical decision-making.

Public administration and security:

  • intelligent data analysis systems,
  • improved public services,
  • automation of administrative processes,
  • tools supporting response to threats.

  • access to AI tools,
  • development of digital competences,
  • training programmes supporting talent development.

Environment and the space sector:

Gaia AI Factory within the European AI ecosystem

Gaia AI Factory will cooperate with other European AI Factories, including:

  • PIAST AI Factory in Poznań,
  • LUMI AI Factory in Finland.

This cooperation will create an integrated network of infrastructure supporting artificial intelligence development across Europe.

Gaia AI Factory strengthens Poland’s position as an important contributor to the European AI ecosystem and creates a foundation for future innovations in science, industry and space technologies.
